In November 2010, I attended my first Roller Derby bout: “Blockenspiel” Auld Reekie Roller Girls’ Twisted Thistles vs. Bear City Roller Derby’s Berlin Bombshells, invited by an old university friend who was a referee. I was utterly confused until the last two minutes, when I finally had an “A-HA!!!” moment just in time to be able to appreciate the nailbiting final jam in which Berlin took the win, 109 points to 108. I attended another game, then another, and started bringing my camera (a Canon EOS 450D back then) to bouts and shot from the audience. After upgrading from a 450D to a 550D, unofficial photography became official photography sometime around late 2012-early 2013. Since then I’ve had a couple of equipment upgrades and shot over 80 games in Scotland; women’s, men’s, co-ed and junior derby. It’s safe to say I’m firmly hooked – on the cake stall almost as much as the game! The links on these pages are to the photo albums I have published on Facebook (I have not included closed games, junior derby or miscellaneous items such as headshots).
